Hi! I’m Jamie, I blog over at C.R.A.F.T. and I’ve lived in numerous rentals, most recently this south Florida apartment, we called Sunny. I’m here to tell you, you can make your rental cute and organized, and get this… you can do it on a budget. True story! I’m doing a 3 part series for ForRent.com to share my super simple solutions to make your rental apartment/ house an organized, oh so pretty space for you to call home.

Today, we’re tackling the bathroom by sprucing up your counter clutter, finding a pretty place for those q-tips, and organizing the jewels! In a rental, the trick is to do things that you can take with you and use again, even after you leave.

Tip 1. Glass vases: I’m sure you have a few of these lingering in back of one of your kitchen cabinets. Grab 3, preferably of varying sizes, and add cotton balls, q-tips, and hair brushes. Set the vases on your counter or on a shelf above your toilet. Voila. Instant cuteness.

Tip 2. Perfume on a tray: In my 28 years I’ve learned a few things, and one of them is: If it’s not in front of my face, I forget about it and don’t use/ do it. This takes me to tip numero dos, don’t hide your perfume or jewelry for that matter. Perfume is expensive and those bottles are pretty. Take a little trip to the thrift store or raid you mama’s china cabinet and steal borrow a silver tray. Collect your perfume bottles from under the sink and set them all out on your tray. I like to stick my deodorant on that tray too. Place your tray on your dresser and admire. You can thank me later, ha!

Tip 3. Medicine cabinet: Obviously everyone does not have a medicine cabinet in their rental, but if you do, please utilize that sucker! Now, I was very lucky and in Florida discovered an amazing trick. Be prepared to be amazed….best of all, you just need magnets for this tip.  Once you place the magnets inside, take your tiny scissors, tweezers, and nail cutters and hang them up. With small spaces it’s important to use all available wall space, even inside your medicine cabinet, for storage solutions!

Tip 4. Necklace organizer: This goes back to Tip 2 and keeping pretty things out of the cabinet for you to use on a daily basis. Over on C.R.A.F.T. there is a step-by-step tutorial on how to build this necklace organization solution, but the real secret is in how you hang this tip. Command strips are a renters best friend! You can use them as hooks to hang your handbags, hats, scarves, necklaces, belts, etc. And if you look to move, you can remove with no damage to the wall (if applied correctly).

Tip 5. Towels: Put them in a basket and stick the basket in a corner in your bedroom, hallway, or bathroom. Done. Don’t use valuable under the sink space for towels when you can roll them up and display like a luxurious spa would. If you don’t want to use your limited floor space, hang a basket on your bathroom wall and place the rolled towels inside. Looks pretty and easy to access!

Being a renter may pose obstacles when it comes to decorating; but that doesn’t mean you can’t add a little personality to your neutral space. Looking at non-permanent solutions for your apartment is easy and often is most cost effective. Here are ways to revamp your blank canvas:

Select a Color Palette
One of the best ways to freshen up your space is to use pops of color on top of a mainly neutral palette. White or tan walls and neutral furniture do not have to be boring and void of personality.  Here, we have a dark brown sectional sofa with a neutral wall color. Add a few bold accents in fun shades of blue, yellow and orange to spice up the space. Browse tips on how to decorate your space using turquoise.

Add Pattern
Florals, solids, and geometric patterns are mixed together to add variety and texture to the living room. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and fabrics in your apartment. Artwork
While being an apartment renter may not allow you to paint your canvas, you have the opportunity to create color on your walls using art work. Emerald Green
Pantone has named emerald green the color of the year for 2013, and we couldn’t be happier. This color transitions well for cool and warm color palettes. If you’re a little uncertain how to bring this color into your apartment, start small. A simple plant for your space should do the trick; as you warm up to the color, bring in other small touches like pillows or lamps. Or you can take stab at our next hot trend!

Painted Furniture
We find this trend especially beneficial for renters as it follows the ‘going green’ movement, by extending the life of a current piece of furniture, and helps save costs. SCORE! You can locate furniture pieces to refinish at local thrift stores or garage sales. It’s amazing what you can do with a coat of spray paint, a little imagination and some elbow grease! Maybe an emerald green furniture piece is on the horizon? It serves dual purposes; hitting two of the top three décor trends.

Graphic Patterns
Our friends at Homes.com shared the 2012 top pattern trends for home decor earlier this year, and even share tips for mixing and matching patterns in the home, but 2013 will present even more excitement as bold, graphic patterns are here to stay! Impactful in a small space, graphic patterns should be used in moderation unless you feel comfortable mixing and matching (did you read those tips?). We recommend starting with a rug or a framed piece of art and go from there. Incorporating the color of the year, is another way to bring in two of the top three décor trends for your apartment.

Over the years we have seen technology transform lives. Long gone are the days where cell phones are the latest trends; now it’s which Smartphone and/or tablet are you packing?

We are also noticing that technology is transforming stereotypes of what it can do for us.  Social media gives us the ability to connect with family and friends by providing a community in the online world, and gaming consoles are striving to have a place inside your home outside of just video games.

These technological advancements also amaze us in their cost-saving opportunities for you.

Case in point 1: Streaming services. Reduce entertainment expenses like cable or going out to the movie theaters by using game consoles with streaming entertainment services like Netflix and Hulu. Depending on what package you sign up for, you can spend as little has $6-$20 per month versus $60+ on cable! Depending on your streaming service, you can stream movies and television series on your gaming console, home computer or mobile device and/or order 1-2 DVDs to be shipped to your place. According to the NYTimes, you can get Amazon’s streaming-movie service free with the purchase of an Amazon Prime membership — $79 a year. (That comes out to $6.58 a month, although you can’t actually pay monthly.) And to keep your entertainment experience top notch, many of these services have HD capability.

Case in Point 2: Home phone-what’s that? About half of Americans have Smartphones, according to a study by consulting firm Deloitte; therefore, the landline in your rental is quickly becoming obsolete. Save costs (roughly $15-$30 depending on provider) by using your cell phone instead of a home phone; make the majority of your telephone calls during unlimited use times (for some providers that is after 9pm). Skype is also a service that allows you to talk to others over the Internet; if you have a web cam, Skype allows you video chat.

Case in Point 3: Advanced home security options. In a recent article published on Homes.com, 7 advancements in home security they share that protecting your home or apartment is easier than ever! Mobile apps designed to help you monitor your apartment’s safety, and at-home security systems that synch up with leaky faucets to help you avoid too much damage to your personal belongings help you save money and keep you safe! Be sure to check with your property Management Company or landlord regarding any services that hook up to their property.

As renters, we are always seeking multi-purpose pieces and space-saving ideas.  One trend we can get behind is multi-purpose technology systems, such as gaming consoles. Gaming consoles are becoming more a part of your lifestyle beyond just playing video games.  The features offered now fully integrate with your apartment lifestyle through fitness apps, social media access, DVD player, streaming services for movies and television series, viewing pictures, music and more. With all of these services on the gaming console, such as PlayStation and Xbox, you’re saving space by eliminating the need for a DVD player and/or cable box.

Additionally, these consoles allow you to buy video games and movies on the actual console through Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, versus having the game/movie take up space in your place. Think of all the space saved with DVD and video game boxes out of your crowded apartment!

Another interesting factoid? We’ve heard that the new Wii-U system will allow you to bring the console with you wherever you go inside your apartment. Imagine, you can now move room to room with the new Wii-U console without missing a beat!

During the two week time period of July 26^th through August 6^th, 2010, ForRent.com participated in a back-to-school supply drive. The school supplies collected went to the Hampton Roads Corporate Volunteer Council’s (HRCVC) Back-to-School Drive, which will be distributed to children in the Norfolk, Virginia area school system. Dominion Enterprises-parent company of ForRent.com-participated in this drive, and ForRent.com helped bring in a total of 1,235 school supplies for the students. Items included were backpacks, loose leaf paper, notebooks, pens, glue sticks, colored pencils & markers, calculators, index cards and more!

Since 2000, the HRCVC donated filled backpacks to nonprofits who serve at-risk youth. The filled backpacks are donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Virginia, Seton Youth Shelters and Tidewater Youth Services Foundation.  The backpacks are going to middle and high school at-risk students served by these nonprofits.  The extra supplies, such as bottles of glue and crayons are being donated along with smaller backpacks to local Title 1 schools in the Hampton Roads area.

The purpose of the drive is to help unprivileged kids get a head start on the new school year. I know I can speak for all of ForRent.com employees when I state we are so glad to have been able to help!

Announcement: Joining the ForRent.com mobile offering, ParaRentar.com, a fully-translated Spanish apartment listing web site, has gone mobile!

The Pew Research Center revealed that the U.S. Hispanic market consists of avid mobile users. According to a research conducted during a Spring 2010 Pew Internet study, 87 percent of Hispanics own a cell phone. Of that total, 83 percent use their phone to send and receive text messages, 51 percent access the mobile web, 47 percent send and receive emails, 36 percent use a social network sited and 33 percent watch video.

“Hispanic consumers are tech-savvy,” notes Elsa Morales, director of Hispanic Initiatives with ForRent.com. “According to the Pew Hispanic Center, Hispanics online are younger than the general U.S. Internet population and eight in ten young Latinos, ages 16-25, have cell phones. We have had some crazy weather this year; including freezing winters with -20 temperatures and over 100 degree temperatures in the summer. If you’re thinking you are safe from hurricane season, think again!

Here are a few tips to help you and your family prepare should a hurricane be in the future:

Emergency Supplies:

• Flashlight(s) & extra batteries
• Portable, battery-operated radio
• First aid kit and essential medicines
• Carry some cash
• Not that many travel without one but have your cellular phone (fully charged or car charger)
• Bottled water (recommend 3 gallons per person)
• Canned food with manual can opener
• Protective clothing, rainwear, bedding and sleeping bags

And for all of us pet owners, make sure you are prepared to travel with your animal:

• Bring carriers, crates, leashes, shot records, food, litter, blankets, I.D tags, etc for your pet
• Make sure your pet is up to date with all shots
• Attach the address/phone number of your evacuation site to your pets crate

’50s CHIC

• Decorate with turquoise, sea-green and pinks that ranged from bubble-gum to salmon.
• Use color in especially prominent places such as large accessory items like rugs, side chairs and curtains.
• Poodle themes were also particularly popular! Dot your apartment with dancing poodles, or poodle-themed accessories like bathroom accessories, kitchen décor or figurines.

If these time periods don’t capture your artistic design style, look to other time periods for inspiration.  Keep digging through our past to find a motif that best fits your personality. You will not only have an apartment that reflects you, but one that’s unlike any other!

New mobile bar code scanner lets renters scan For Rent Magazine^® bar codes to find apartments in their area

If Calvin Klein can do it, why not us? As Rick Mathieson highlights in his article Video: Forget Those Racy Billboards-Calvin Klein’s Showing off its QR Codes, the fashion retailer has replaced three of its billboards in NYC and Los Angeles with giant QR codes with the headline “Get It Uncensored.” Snap a photo with your smart phone and you get an exclusive, 40-second commercial that can then be shared with friends via Facebook and Twitter. This just adds to the list of highly interactive experiences that brands like Coca-Cola, Domino’s and others are enabling through QR codes.

Now ForRent.com is on that exclusive list as we announce the launch of Snap and Go on the For Rent Magazine. Prospective renters can use this tag to scan a bar code through the camera on their mobile phone, which brings them to their area’s apartment listings on the ForRent.com mobile site. The “Snap and Go” tag is a mobile media first in the multi-housing industry.

According to a study conducted by the National Apartment Association in June 2010, 76 percent of consumers now believe renting to be a better option than homeownership; that’s a 5 percent increase from 2008! With the ever-changing real estate landscape, it’s clear that consumers are rethinking the way they approach the home search process. In fact a recent study by Hitwise notes there has been significant growth in the search term “homes for rent” versus “houses for sale” between July 2009 and early July 2010. New iPad application offers an intuitive display to renters searching for apartmentsThe ForRent.com iPad application was intuitively designed to cater to the tech-savvy apartment shopper. Great things come in small packages, and small dogs are the epitome of that rule.  Within their small exterior lies a big heart just waiting to love you and welcome you home daily.

In addition to easily adapting to any environment, small dogs bring loyalty and friendship to any family dynamic. A large part of what makes small dogs so great is their impactful personalities. Their desire to play with anything, even two or three times its size, is very endearing. And perhaps what makes small dogs, as well as larger dogs, sought-after is their capability to love unconditionally. They have a knack of forming bonds with their owners unlike any other.
