Just Call Me Ms. Fixer-Upper

I recently moved into a condo, which I’m renting from the owner.  This condo is located in a building considered an apartment building, if you will.  Upon moving in, I knew I wanted to make this space my own.  Small upgrades can go a long way and I sure didn’t want to feel limited in decorating and “sprucing up” the place just because I don’t own my condo.  I knew that there were plenty of ways to brighten up my area and make it my home.

Move-in day was exciting, but I found a lot of little “issues.”  Meaning, there were a few things that I wanted to do to upgrade the space to fit my style.  Starting point, my bathroom.

One thing I knew I wanted to change was my toilet seat.  This was a quick-fix that not many would think of, but it’s an easy upgrade and quite inexpensive, I might add.  Check out Lowe’s® hardware store in the bathroom fixtures section and you will find a plethora of toilet seats.  They’ve got round as well as oblong seats in a variety of different colors.  I rolled to Lowe’s and found exactly what I needed.  The directions are super simple and you don’t even need a screwdriver for installation.

When choosing my toilet seat, I chose a beige color to match the color of my toilet.  One thing to remember, make sure you identify whether your toilet seat is round or oblong because it would be a shame to get caught in a rut with an oblong toilet seat and your toilet is actually round.

That change was quick and easy.  Next - new showerhead.  I was a little less than pleased with water spatting to and fro from the existing showerhead.  Your bathroom, more specifically, your shower is supposed to be your sanctuary and that’s what I was looking to transform it into.  Lowe’s came through for me again.  I chose an awesome showerhead with three settings (jet stream, mist and massage - my fav!) for ridiculously cheap and now I can actually enjoy my showers.  Again, installation is easy - all you really need is an adjustable wrench and maybe some WD-40 to ease off the old showerhead.Showerhead

And there you have it.  Two super simple upgrades that won’t even come close to breaking the bank.  New showerhead - $6.99, new toilet seat - $13.99, upgrading your sanctuary - priceless.  Do-it-yourself projects made easy.  Stay tuned for more easy and fun ways to upgrade your apartment.

Decorating with the Color Yellow

Yellow Pattern CouchContinuing our weekly trend, here are some amazing tips on how to refresh your home using the happy color yellow. As the color of sunshine and daisies, yellow brightens up dark rooms and breathes warmth into cold spaces. And remember, these tips will accommodate most limitations given for apartment renters!

For an elegant feel, add black and white furniture with strong silhouettes to a room in addition to the color yellow. In the photo example, a simple color scheme of white, soft yellow, and black creates a timeless look to this room.

Pale yellow walls set a soothing tone. Pairing cheerful colors, such as soft greens and yellows are also very welcoming.

A beautiful combination is blue with yellow. It adds a classic French country feeling to any space, especially with patterns that include the fleur de lis, the swan motif, stripes, small floral Champagne Posterprints and checkerboards.

Curtains, appliances and kitchen towels in a mustard yellow coordinate with rustic cupboards (common in many apartment communities) can give a kitchen a Mediterranean ambiance.  Pair a few mosaic plates with red, blue and orange on the wall to really get the feeling going!

A floral-inspired bedspread, curtains and chandelier bring a romantic feeling to a bedroom.

A bold beam of sunny yellow can be brought in with an accent rug or a piece of art work.

For a multifunctional room or a child bedroom, use yellow with other primary colors (red and blue).  Children of most ages like the bright colors, plus this palette can be used for many years.

Yellow backing on bookshelves will make the books stand out on a custom-built shelf.

Combine warm shades of yellow, gold, and tangerine give to a room a sophisticated and elegant look. The walls, floor, and drapery are kept neutral in shades of white and cream (as most apartments are). Yellow upholstery, pillows, and artwork add a bit of color but keep it rich and elegant (see photo on left).

One of the best qualities of the color yellow is that it goes great with nearly every other color — white, orange, green, pink, blue and brown. So if you’re looking to punch up a space, why not consider this pleasing color! What’s next on the palate? The color PINK!

Decorating with the Color Blue

Continuing our weekly trend, here is an article with some fantastic tips on how to refresh your home using the color blue! Bring the outdoors inside with a splash of sophisticated and refreshing blue!

Make a bold statement by using deep blue. If you can’t paint, curtains are a great effect for your walls (especially if they are floor to ceiling length).

Blue BathFor added excitement in a bathroom, replace the knobs on your vanity and/or medicine cabinet with blue ones (just make sure you keep all the screws and original knobs when it’s time to move out). White and blue bath accessories, artwork and towels would really complete the look.

Blue checkered details really add a lot of fun as well as a retro twist to any space. You can use this idea for pillows on a bench in your apartment or for cushions around your dinning room table.

Silvery gray and pale aqua is a perfectly glamorous combination for a vanity table. An ornate mirror makes an elegant topper, however if you can’t take down your mirror, removable stickers to adjourn your mirror will work.

For a beach themed apartment, you can use removable cushion covers from an outdoor patio set. A blue stripped rug and an antiqued painted coffee table add dimension to the space; as would blue stripes and fun accents like a nautical star or chandelier.
Beach Theme Accents/Decor

Also, don’t be afraid to mix a variety of patterns - just stick within the same color palette. A delicate blue-and-white curtain blends beautifully with a shag rug, toile quilt, and boldly striped cushions. My favorite pattern, besides the classic stripes, is damask. Having a piece in the room using blue damask instantly makes it trendy and chic.

Paint and furniture aren’t the only ways to bring color into a room; fun knickknacks in the same hue will do the trick also!

What’s the next color on the menu? Yellow! Soon we will post ideas for decorating in the powerful color of the sun!

Decorating with the Color Red

Ready for more decorating tips? This time we’re listing ideas with the chosen color red. The color red seems to be noticed more than other colors. Red cars have a notorious reputation for being pulled over more by cops because of the vibrant color. A small dose of a bold and vibrant red adds energy and impact to many things, including any room in your apartment. Here are a few tips to decorate your apartment space that will sure accommodate most limitations for apartment renters have!

If you’re ready to fully embrace red, go all out with a fire engine shade. Try it in a small room, like an office and pick up accent pieces that really add an impact. Rug, curtains, a big canvas painting, etc. Even choose office supplies and/or Red Decorated Kitchenorganization tools in the vibrant color.

Red doesn’t have to be flashy, certain shades, like a rich tomato red, add rustic warmth to a space.

Do you have an all white kitchen or bathroom? Apple red curtains, along with coordinating collectibles and dish/hand towels, add a splash of color to a pristine space.

A single distinctive piece, like a vintage dresser with ornate hardware (or a refurbished dresser you did yourself), in the color red can add just a touch of drama to a neutral room.

A symphony of red shades and patterns can play off each other nicely. Rather than clashing like you might expect, different patterns actually add depth and interest because they are within the same color family. Red Curtain Dining Room

Give your dinner table a refreshingly simple update by painting your chairs candy apple red.

A boldly painted dresser, drapes and throw pillows add strength and focus to help to move the eye around the room.

Decorating with Color

I read some amazing tips from the Country Living website that will instantly refresh your decor by trying out a few new color shades.  Given that most of our readers are apartment renters, these tips will accommodate those with limitations!

I will be splitting up these ideas into five blog postings, one blog for each color. These will provide specific details with each color palette for creative decorating tips. What’s on today’s agenda? The color green!

Pair pale green with other pastel shades for a retro look.  Fun details like a trendy lampshade and a wall display of plates add character and charm!

A neutral couch can be given a tropical feel with botanical-print pillows and broad-leaf potted plants.

Apple green paired with white makes for a cheery and inviting room.  It also happens to be a very big trend in home decorating!Green Plants in Decor

Don’t forget to include nature! You can add beautiful potted plants to complement any space (see photo)!

In a white, airy dining room, a green tile area rug will help ground the space. Dark wood furniture would also balance the bright white elements.

Another great color combination is green with aqua! A green furniture item, such as a couch or chair, partnered with cool aqua creates a fun but relaxing room. A geometric area rug with those colors can help bring the combination together.

Kelly green linen curtains enhance the elegance of old world furniture and provide a touch of color. White pillows with green patterns would also dress up a room as well as add flair for the otherwise traditional space.

Green sofas give a garden air to a space filled with pale neutrals. Light, bright colors are good candidates for airy spaces with tall ceilings and ample windows. This is actually how I’ve decorated my place; paired with beach accents it’s a very calming environment.

Green HutchThe same feeling can be accomplished in your kitchen! Vintage dishware in icy blue, watery aqua and shades of green throughout a space creates an environment that is inviting to guests and calming for the cook. Place those dishes and other décor items inside a green hutch, shown on the left, and you’ve created a fabulous focal point!

How to Create a Multifunctional Guest Bedroom/Office

In the world of apartment living, we all know how important it is to create a multifunctional space. I can’t tell you how many pieces of furniture I have purchased with the thought of ‘hey, that can double as this!’ or something to that effect. When you’re living in a one or two bedroom apartment, it’s essential to get all the practicality you can out of the space provided. So here are a few tips for those of you sharing a spare bedroom between an office and guest bedroom.

Office Space:

You will need a few key items for your office space in this room. Obviously a work station, a chair, office utensils, maybe a computer, books, etc.  Depending on whether you want your work area to be seen or not will determine what type of work station you get, either an armoire or a desk.  Be sure and have handy storage items for your pens, paper, personal mail, notes, etc. so that when guests do stay they are hidden. Having decorative storage containers will serve two functions as it is practical and eye catching!

You can also have larger office supplies stored on a bookshelf near the work station or inside the closet.

Guest Bedroom and Office

Guest Bedroom:

Think about how you would feel as a guest in your multifunctional guest bedroom. You know you will want a sleeping area that is practical for during the day and at night. So a day bed or a futon would be the best option here-sofa by day, bed by night.  Be sure to purchase one that is comfortable for your guest to sleep on. Also purchase plenty of blankets, sheets, pillows, toiletries, etc. A creative way to store those items is: a few small storage containers to slip under the day bed/futon so it is out of the way or for a more decorative option (but only if you have the space) is a nice trunk or storage ottoman. Storage cubes and chests can triple as seating, storage, and end tables. A night stand would be nice with a lamp.  And of course a few hangers inside your closet for guests to hang their garments would be appreciated.

Décor:
Now the décor for this space needs to be planned out as well. You want something you can live with everyday while using your work station but also something that is appealing to guests when they are visiting. I personally have a cool color palette (see pictures). The walls are a nice blue, the futon is a light brown and the sheet set/blanket is a cream and green pattern. The pattern isn’t too overwhelming for the space and it isn’t too girly. Color blocked trimmings (silver office supplies, hardware, and photo frames) help tie it together.
Wall-mounted accessories make the best use of the room.  Floating shelves is a good way to use height for space by storing trinkets or books on the wall. As we’ve mentioned in our ‘How to Decorate Walls Without Painting’ blog, mirrors help give the illusion of more space. Thoughtful art choices help warm the room.

And don’t forget to add a vase with fresh flowers as a nice touch. It’ll have guests wanting to visit you over and over again!
