Who here misses the day when your only option for a warm meal was boiled veggies and mystery meat from the campus cafeteria? Let’s be honest with ourselves, no one enjoys eating food they have to question. Well I’m here to help! There’s only one solution to avoid eating yucky cafeteria food…DON’T! A quick and easy alternative may be cooking a meal in your apartment. Most of you may think that cooking takes too much time. Today I will show you a quick way to turn yuck to yum!
One basic necessity of every college student would have to be a crock-pot. Never leave home without it! There are many benefits to owning a crock-pot:
• For those of you that leave your apartment during the day for work or class, the crock-pot is safe enough to leave turned on all day. When you get home, your dinner is cooked and ready to eat!
• Another benefit of the crock-pot is that it doesn’t heat up your kitchen/dorm. This can be especially valuable in the summer but don’t limit it to summertime cooking. This appliance should be used year round!
• Often times when we drag in from a long day of listening to boring professors it’s hard to conjure up the motivation to cook a homemade meal. Crock-pot’s are perfect for days like these because your meal is ready when you get home!
• You can buy crock-pots at most retail stores for around $25.00 for the average size and more or less for a bigger or smaller one. But why spend $25.00 when they are abundant in thrift stores and yard sales? I bought mine at a thrift store for $4.00! If you do decide to buy one at a thrift store or yard sale, be sure to plug it in and see if it heats up first!
One of My Favorite Crock-pot Recipe’s:
This yummy crock-pot recipe will certainly satisfy your love of home cooked food. Just turn it on and then you’re off to conquer the day. It doesn’t get any better than that!
The first thing you will need to do is to get your crock-pot out and find a flat surface where you can leave it throughout the day.
“Step 1: Time to Shop” Now it’s time to hit the grocery store with your list of ingredients!
6 poultry breasts (boneless, skinless)
3 potatoes (cubed)
1 onion (chopped)
1 apple (chopped)
1 can chicken broth
3 Tablespoon curry powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups peas (the frozen kind but thawed)
2 cups minute rice (uncooked)
**To save time, buy canned potatoes and frozen apples
“Step 2: Dump It and Go” This is my all time favorite part of crock pot cooking because everything gets dumped in without any rhyme or reason. The only ingredients you should be sure to leave out in this step are the peas and uncooked rice!
“Step 3: It’s going to be a long day” Have a lot to do today? No worries! There are two ways to cook this delicious meal so it will be ready when you are. You can either turn your temperature to a Low setting for 8- 10 hours or a High setting for 4- 6 hours. My suggestion would be to do all of your preparation when you get up in the morning and turn your crock pot on just before you leave for the day. But, whatever floats your boat!
“Step 4: Home Sweet Home” As you enter your apartment at the end of the day the smell of delicious home cooking should all but smack you in the face. The only thing left to do now is to pour in your peas and rice! Let these simmer in your mixture for about 25 minutes on a Low setting. After that, DIG IN!
