We All Scream for Ice Cream!
Who doesn’t love a batch of their favorite flavor of ice cream? In honor of Ice Cream Day, we wanted to find an easy way for you to make your own! Remember Melanie’s post about ice cream making in May? http://bit.ly/LHUqyA Well, I’ve found a couple methods that don’t require a big fancy machine (if you don’t have one), and you can do it in your apartment while saving a lot of money!
What you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (if you want it to be extra sweet, use 2 teaspoon)
- Alternate flavor: if you want chocolate ice cream, add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
- 4-6 tablespoons of salt
- 2 trays of ice
With a Freezer Bag:
Take roughly two quarts of ice, preferably crushed, and put it in a gallon-sized bag with the
rock salt. The gallon bag should be about half full of the ice and salt mixture.
Put the ice cream ingredients into a quart bag and seal it tightly. (You may have to double bag.) Then place the sealed ice cream bag into the gallon bag. Make sure the bags stay sealed. You do not want the contents of the bags to mix at all.. Seal with extra duct tape if necessary.
Gently shake the bags for about fifteen to twenty minutes. The content of the quart bag should start to turn into solid ice cream. You
want to make sure you’re mixing what’s in the quart bag but not so vigorously you cause a leak. Double-bagging should prevent this.
Remove the finished ice cream from the sandwich bag and serve, yum!
With a Coffee Can:
This is very similar to the bag method, except instead of using two bags, you use two coffee cans, one bigger than the other.
Put the ice cream mixture in the smaller coffee can. Seal tightly.
Put the smaller coffee can in the big coffee can along with ice and rock salt. Seal the large can tightly.
Shake the large can vigorously for about 10 minutes. Make sure the cans are sealed well and do it outside, just in case. Check the small to see if the mixture has turned into ice cream yet. If you see ice crystals forming, stir or whisk.
Continue shaking, rolling, or throwing until ice cream is formed.
