Healthy Snacks
With the start of the New Year, it’s safe to say that a large amount of people are striving to eat healthier, exercise more and live a happier, healthier life. One way to kick start that New Year’s resolution is choosing healthy snack options. According to the Mayo Clinic, “select foods that satisfy your hunger, supply your body with energy and provide important nutrients is the best way to choose healthy snack options.” Opting for snacks of 100 calories or less will help you stay within your daily calorie goal.
It’s important when selecting healthy snacks to choose foods from the following categories: fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and low fat dairy products.
- Examples of quick and easy fruits and vegetables are carrots, apples, bananas, grapes, celery, etc. Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are essential for everyone; the benefits are simply amazing.
- Whole grain snacking options are also nutritionally beneficial. For example, rice cakes, pita bread, whole wheat graham crackers and goldfish. According to The World’s Healthiest Food, in its whole state, wheat offers numerous health benefits ranging from cancer prevention, to protection against diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and free radical damage to the structure of our cells.
- Nuts and seeds such as pistachios and sunflower seeds are concentrated sources of protein, healthy fats, B vitamins, vitamin E, iron, magnesium and other minerals.
- Eating low fat dairy products such as yogurt, cottage cheese and low fat cheeses are excellent sources of calcium and protein, both of which we all need.
