During the month of February, which as you know, contains Valentine’s Day, an extremely commercialized holiday, it is good to think about other aspects ‘love’ can encompass. For example, the love of a family member, the love of a friend, the love of a pet, the love of your apartment, the love of your hair or even your city.
Speaking of love and cities, did you know that Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, is referred to as the ‘City of Brotherly Love’? It’s because translated from Greek philos is love and adelphos is brother. The ‘Brotherly Love’ motto is attributed to William Penn, the English Quaker, who had envisioned the area to be a place where people of any color or background could live together in peace and harmony. Isn’t that LOVEly!
So instead of viewing this month with negativity and skepticism, perhaps we can adopt a different perspective and appreciate what there is to LOVE in your life! Starting with that beautiful apartment in Philly!

Finally, our last bit of tips in our Part III Make Your Apartment Energy Efficient blog. As promised, ways to conserve energy using your appliances!
Appliances:
- Okay, so this tip is actually REALLY COOL! Did you know that if you thaw frozen food in the refrigerator (instead of the countertop-which I am ashamed to say I do all the time) that you actually help the refrigerator cut down the energy it uses to control the cool temperature? The frozen food helps with that while it’s defrosting. All you have to do is think about it the night before.
- And if you’ve been paying attention to any of our posts regarding energy efficiency, you know that you need to turn off and/or unplug appliances when you are not using them (this includes computers, cell phone chargers and small appliances in the kitchen)
- Whenever possible use the range top instead of the oven as it uses far less energy.
- When cooking or baking make sure you also don’t open the door any more than absolutely necessary. The oven loses about 20% of its heat every time you open the door! Every time! WOW!! So if you need to peek in and see how that turkey is doing, just flip on the light.
Well that’s pretty much what I retained from the article called ‘Tips for an Energy-Efficient Apartment’ located at Healthgoods.com. I hope you have learned as much as I did. Being energy efficient is very important; not only for the environment, but it will also save you a bundle in the long run! You can always check out our other tips on our Apartments Going Green section of our blog as we strive to put more information out there for everyone. Also, feel free to add any thing that we haven’t yet spoken about. The more information the better!

Okay, so we’ve posted a lot of ‘lovey, dovey’ blogs pertaining to Valentine’s Day. And truth be told I wasn’t even going to blog about this, but I go to check my email this morning and saw this article! It must be shared with everyone! It’s about revenge Valentine’s gifts. So let’s say you and your sweetheart just recently broke up, right before Valentine’s Day, and you want to send him/her a little reminder that you’re still mad about it! Well on Asylum.com, you can. This website offers you many little trinkets to send depending on the level of revenge you’d like to get!
Scrolling through their gallery I saw so many things that almost make me wish I had an ex to send them to! Like the severed middle finger. Instead of actually flipping off your ex, you can now send him/her one in the mail! An authentic voodoo kit to put a curse on your enemy or a mailed stinky dead fish (guaranteed to be extremely offensive) is also available! There are also ‘bitter hearts’ which are like conversation hearts traditional of Valentine’s Day, but with the words ‘dumped, despair and dysfunctional’ written on them instead. And lastly, a mixed CD of the most annoying sounds!
Even if you don’t have an ex you’d like to send a revengeful gift to, just seeing all the possibilities you could send has to make you laugh a little!! And put a little smile on your face this Valentine’s Day!!
