Do you ever wonder why we celebrate the holidays we celebrate? Do you ever look beyond the festivities, gifts, and laughter to understand the roots of the occasion. Maybe you have and maybe you haven’t, but Halloween has a unique history. History.com says that when Europeans came to America they brought their varied Halloween traditions with them. It wasn’t as prevalent in the rigid protestant north as it was in southern colonies like Maryland. Different European ethnic groups and American Indian traditions meshed to form the American version of Halloween.
The first festivities included “Play Parties” that celebrated harvest and people came together to dance, sing, tell stories about the dead, and tell each other’s fortunes. Telling Ghost stories was common as well. History.com also notes that in the second half of the 19th century America was flood with immigrants especially from Ireland, whom helped popularize Halloween nationally.
The Trick or Treat Tradition came from English and Irish Traditions, and Americans began to go from house to house asking for money or food. In the late 1800s though, there was a movement to take the witchcraft out of Halloween and make the holiday more about community get-togethers and games. Halloween eventually lost its religious and superstitious overtones. Trick or Treating evolved over time to be an inexpensive way for the community to share the celebration. Also, in theory giving kids treats prevented them from being the victim of tricks.
Halloween is now the second biggest commercial Holiday, where Americans an estimated spend 6.9 billion dollars. Knowing the history may just be of trivial consequence, but it will help you understand the dynamics behind such a popular holiday!

Summer is here and everyone is antsy to get out of work and do something fun! But oh, what did you say…can’t go out because it costs an arm & a leg? That’s why we’ve assembled a list of relatively inexpensive activities for the summertime!
Rollar bladding-whether you have your own skates or not, this is an activity that can be less than $10!
Local sports game-it could be high school, college or even a minor league game. Tickets for the Norfolk Tides, the AAA baseball team, are about $8.00 per person! Just eat dinner before hand and you’re good to go!
Local book store-you could sit in on free readings for various story titles. Barnes and Nobles has events almost every day in the Hampton Roads area, including a group dedicated to help you overcome writers block!
Visit a museum-
how better to spend a hot summer afternoon than in an air conditioned museum. Not all museums are boring either! The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk only costs $7.00 per adult. You could definitely spend hours staring at beautiful pieces of art work.
Festivals-the amount of carnivals, country fairs or festivals always increase during the summer. My favorite to attend in Norfolk is the Bayou Boogaloo & Cajun Food Festival at Town Point Park. For just $10.00 per person, you can see live entertainment; walk through the amazing New Orleans Art Gallery and more! For just a few bucks more, you can sample some of the mouthwatering Cajun spiced crawfish, jambalaya, gumbo and alligator.
Take a tour-whether it’s of an area you’re not that familiar with or perhaps a historical tour of the city you live in. Williamsburg and Jamestown, Virginia have great tours to really experience the true history our state offers.
Wine Tastings-local winery shops, such as Total Wine in Downtown Norfolk, have free wine tastings in their stores weekly. You would certainly become a connoisseur in no time!
Including some of these activities into your summer plans will ensure you have a slam packed adventurous season! More inexpensive and creative ideas for saving money are in our Nesting in These Economic Times blog.

I had an interesting conversation with Mike Whaling and Lisa Trosien on Twitter last week regarding the benefits for apartment communities going green during this economy. A question was posed whether renters will actually see the benefit of apartment properties going green and therefore, pay the extra premiums associated with it. According to the key findings from a Conscious Consumer Report (2009), 51% polled said they are “willing to pay more” for ‘green’ products. Confirming that study, Apartments.com published a survey stating “apartment communities that offer environmentally-friendly amenities are more likely to turn undecided renters into residents. Additionally, more than half of renters surveyed indicated they would take an apartment community’s commitment to environmental issues into consideration.” However, 66% polled in the Conscious Consumer Report said that price is very important in the purchase decision, implying that price can be the deciding factor.
Therefore, management companies that want to go ‘green’ need to consider factors that will help their bottom line in addition to the prospective renter. You may ask, as Mike did, how can the bottom line in a community with sub-metered utilities be helped? Well, I called the one person I knew would know; that was my father, Scott Bucheister. He is a salesman at Coastal Insulation and was recently certified by Earth Craft Virginia. He commented that “going green can have a direct impact for property manager’s finances by saving money on energy and maintenance costs.” Curious in what ways? Here are a few he mentioned:
Solar Lighting or CFL Bulbs:
The benefits of using solar lighting on an apartment property are abundant. First off, it has low energy costs. It has very little maintenance. And it comes from a renewable resource as it is powered by the sun. Another benefit is that solar lights continue working even if there has been a power outage. Because the energy isn’t coming off of an electrical grid, power outages make no difference. Installing solar lighting for your landscaping needs, wall lights, security lights, etc. around the apartment community will save money. Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs will also prove beneficial to properties in common areas such as community centers, unit hallways, management and maintenance offices, etc.
Low Flow Water Devices:
Water and money can be saved by installing low-flow water devices around the apartment community. In community laundry mats, replace old washers with front-loading ENERGY-STAR washers that conserve water. In the community center install faucet aerators on your bathroom taps. Replace old toilets with new low-flow or ultra-low flow toilets or, in the kitchen, replace old dishwashers with ENERGY-STAR dishwashers that conserve water.
Xeriscaping & WeatherTrak Irrigation Systems:
Xeriscaping refers to landscaping and gardening in ways that reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental irrigation. The specific plants used in xeriscaping depend upon the climate. Some common plants used in Western xeriscaping are agave, cactus, lavender, juniper, sedum and thyme. Advantages of xeriscaping include lower water bills, less time and work needed for maintenance, and there is little or no lawn mowing (saves energy). Xeriscape plants, along with proper bed design, tends to take full advantage of rainfall and when water restrictions are implemented, xeriscape plants will tend to survive, while more traditional plants may be unable to adapt. “If you think about it, most apartment communities completely redo their landscaping every year with the flower beds, lawns, trees, etc. If they use native plants that are drought resistant they don’t have to replant every year to attract new renters,” said Mr. Bucheister. “In fact, I was so impressed with the idea of xeriscaping that I actually implemented this in my garden at home! It’s extremely convenient as I have little to no maintenance compared to beforehand.”
Besides xeriscaping, there are other irrigation systems that are environmentally friendly. While ordinary irrigation systems overwater your landscape, leaving you with high water bills, WeatherTRAK® smart irrigation systems help you save water, money and time by eliminating overwatering. Drawing on information delivered wirelessly from 40,000 weather stations, the irrigation is automatically scheduled based on individual landscaping needs and local weather conditions. And catching rainwater using a rain barrel or other rainwater harvesting system can be used to water outdoor plants.
Energy efficient appliances, windows and light bulbs in apartments tend to help out the renters, yes. They can also be a great selling point in convincing a prospective renter to live at a community. And in my opinion should be done by all apartment communities. However, in the current economic situation property managers should also incorporate environmentally friendly ideas that will help their bottom line as well. Do you agree?

With the housing market in a slump and apartment rates increasing, it’s easy to be hesitant about which to choose: Rent or Buy. More and more apartment residents are thinking of ‘taking the plunge’ so to speak. In fact, very close friends of mine even went as far as speaking with a realtor and looking at houses in their area. They were able to find some that would allow them to pay the same monthly rent as the two bedroom apartment they are currently renting. So why didn’t they decide to jump?
Simple, they weren’t ready for the commitment. The upfront financial burden that comes with purchasing a home was more than they thought and the constant upkeep and maintenance of being a homeowner was a scary prospect. They also weren’t sure where they would be in five years, which would make a permanent residence here pointless.
1. The Upfront Financial Burden
It’s no secret that purchasing a home is a costly decision. Not only are you signing a loan amount for the selling price of the house, but you are also faced with closing costs which consist of lawyer fees, loan officer fees, application processing fees, taxes, etc. That initial cost can be between five to seven percent of the selling price!! If you don’t have that money saved up, be weary of lenders lending out ridiculous amounts of money you may not be able to afford. Or really great ‘no money down’ deals that have hidden clauses in the fine print! This is a main reason why the housing market has plummeted.
2. Upkeep & Maintenance of Homeownership
The comfort of living in an apartment-calling a landlord or management company to fix whatever is wrong with your place-is long gone when you sign on that dotted line of homeownership! Once you become a home owner you are responsible for locating-paying for maintenance workers in addition to your monthly mortgage payment. So if you are uncomfortable with the idea of having to pay additional money to fix any problems, then you may want to stay somewhere where help is just a phone call away and there are no extra fees to have it done!
3. Location in 5 years??
Typically, renting over homeownership has an advantage during the first five years a person purchases a home. Because a good portion of monthly payments do consist primarily of interest on a mortgage, whereas renters just pay to have shelter over their head. If you don’t know where you will be living in five years (or sooner than that), then you may not want to purchase a home. After five years of owning a home is when it becomes beneficial because you are paying down your investment.
So what does this mean? For current renters, it means you should really think about your options. Yes, the housing market may be in a slump and this is the best time to purchase a home; however, you need to make sure you are ready to take on this step. Weigh all the factors and look before you leap!
